Intermediate Opti

Description
This course is designed as an introductory racing course for sailors who are at least 8 and at most 12 years old. Areas of concentration are starts, mark roundings, effective sail trim, weight distribution and heel. Sailors are expected to race in the Green fleet on Wednesdays and will be scored among themselves in that fleet.

Sailors are encouraged to sign up for a minimum of four weeks.

Days, Times, and Duration
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00-4 :00 p.m. 4 or 8 weeks

Age and Previous Experience
8-12.
A sailor must have mastered the basic skills of Beginner Opti to progress to Intermediate Opti, which includes the ability to rig an Opti and sail without assistance. Sailors will be required to complete a swimming test.

Boat and Equipment
Sailors who have an Opti, bring it to class. Rental fees for those without a boat have been included in the enrollment fee, and those sailors will be assigned a Club Opti. However, sailors may need to consider having a new Opti or at least a new sail and spars on their rented Opti in order to improve boat speed and be more competitive in regattas.

Sailors will also need to have a USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD).

Parent Meetings
Instructors will hold a meeting with all parents and all sailors at the end of the last class each week to review progress.

Rain Days
If class is forced indoors, the session will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sailors will learn rules, fleet racing tactics, knots and how to improve boat speed. They will also occasionally play sailing-related games or view instructional videos.

Goals
The Intermediate Opti sailors are expected to form the Green Fleet for first-year racers. They will race with the Advanced Opti sailors on Wednesday afternoons, but will be scored separately. By the end of the session, sailors need to be comfortable and competent at starting, rounding marks, and displaying proper sail trim to maximize boat speed. Sailors will also be encouraged to attend several off-pond ECSA regattas on Tuesdays.
