Beginning Opti

Description
This course is designed for novice sailors ages 8 – 11. Starting with identifying wind direction and understanding points of sail, sailors will learn to rig and sail an Optimist Dinghy.

To qualify to move up from Beginning Opti to Intermediate Opti, sailors will need to sail solo from Opti Beach, out the channel, around the floating dock and back in the channel to Opti Beach.

Sailors are encouraged to sign up for a minimum of four weeks. However, two-week sessions might be possible with the approval of the Sailing Program Director

Days, Times and Duration
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon. 4 or 8 weeks

Age Group and Previous Experience
8-11.
Sailors should have completed Beginning Sailing or the equivalent and be comfortable getting into an Opti. Sailors will be required to complete a swimming test.

Boat and Equipment
Sailors who have an Opti, bring it to class. Rental fees for those without a boat have been included in the enrollment fee, and those sailors will be assigned a Club Opti. Sailors will also need to have a USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD).

Parent Meetings
Instructors will hold a meeting with all parents and all sailors at the end of the last class each week to review progress.

Rain Days
If class is forced indoors, the session will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Sailor will learn parts of a boat, knots, points of sail and racing rules. They will also occasionally play sailing-related games or view instructional videos.

Goals
In addition to feeling comfortable in a boat, the overarching goal is to have sailors “go solo,” which means rigging a boat on their own, sailing out the channel, around the floating dock and back in the channel to Opti Beach. The solo sail will be scheduled the last day of a sailor’s session. If successful, sailors can move to Intermediate Opti.
