Beginning Sailing

Description
This class is designed for our youngest novice sailors who are at least 7. They may learn to sail in a variety of boats, and if two sailors want to share an Opti, that is also an option. Unless the club runs out of rental Optis, Beginning Sailing and Beginning Opti will meet simultaneously.

Sailors are encouraged to sign up for a minimum of four weeks, although a two-week session might be possible with the approval of the Sailing Program Director.

Days, Times and Duration
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. 4-8 weeks
(If the club runs out of rental Optis, the days may change.]

Age Group and Previous Experience
8-11
If a 7-year old child is comfortable getting into an Opti, they can enter this program with the approval of a Head Instructor. Previous experience in the Junior Crew class is preferred, but not required. Sailors will be required to complete a swimming test.

Boat and Equipment
Boats used could be Beetles or Optis. Sailors will need to have a USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD).

Rain Days
If class is forced indoors, the session will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Sailors will learn the parts of a boat, knots and points of sailing. They will also occasionally play sailing-related games.

Parent Meetings
Instructors will meet with parents and sailors at the end of the last class each week to review progress.

Goals
In addition to feeling comfortable in a boat, the overarching goal of this class is to make sailing fun. If a sailor is ready and wants to “go solo,” they will rig an Opti on their own, sail out the channel, around the floating dock and back in the channel to Opti Beach. If successful, a sailor may move up to Intermediate Opti, but will not be required to do so.
