Advanced Opti

Description
This course is designed for sailors of at least age 9 who have mastered Intermediate Opti skills and are ready for a significant off-pond ECSA racing experience. Ocean sailing between the Inn Beach and Fenway Beach will occur on several days, weather permitting. Winning tactics, roll tacking, sail trim and rules knowledge will be emphasized.

An 8-week commitment to this class is strongly recommended.

Days, Times and Duration
Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:00-4:00 p.m. Tuesday 7:30 am – 5 pm [ECSA Regatta Day]. 4-8 weeks.

Age Group and Previous Experience
Sailors must be at least 9 years old and have Opti racing experience. Sailors will be required to complete a swimming test.

Boat and Equipment
Sailors who have an Opti, bring it to class. Rental fees for those without a boat have been included in the enrollment fee, and those sailors will be assigned a Club Opti. However, sailors may need to consider having a new Opti or at least new sails and spars on their rented Opti in order to improve boat speed and be more competitive in regattas.

A USCG-approved personal flotation device (PFD) is required.

Parent Meetings
Instructors will hold a meeting with all parents and all sailors at the end of the last class each week to review progress.

Rain Days
If class is forced indoors, class will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sailors will work extensively with rules and on racing tactics. They will also occasionally view instructional videos.

Goals
Sailors will be expected to maximize boat speed and to be successful racers on and off the pond. Sailors will be expected to attend multiple off-pond regattas.
